Resin (SLA) 3D Printing: The Basics

SLA printers use liquid resin and light to make parts with fine detail and smooth surfaces.

How it works

A light source cures liquid resin layer by layer. The part is lifted out of the resin when it is finished.

Good for

Small parts with fine detail, smooth surfaces, miniatures and master patterns.

Limits

Build sizes are usually smaller than FDM, many resins are more brittle than FDM plastics, and parts need washing and curing after printing.

Safety

Wear gloves, work in a ventilated space, and keep uncured resin off skin. Do not pour liquid resin down the drain. Cure leftover resin in light before disposing of it.

Post-processing

Wash the part in a suitable wash liquid, remove the supports, then cure it under UV light.

This is general guidance. Always follow your printer manufacturer's instructions.
