PLA vs PETG vs ABS vs TPU: Choosing a Material
The right material depends on what your part has to do. Here is a quick guide to the four materials we print most.
PLA
Easy to print, with good detail and a clean finish. It is stiff, but it softens at fairly low temperatures, so it is not a good choice for parts left in a hot car or near heat. Good for prototypes, models, decor and display pieces.
PETG
Tougher and less brittle than PLA, with better resistance to heat and many chemicals. A good all-round choice for functional parts, covers and enclosures.
ABS
Strong, and more heat resistant than PLA. It is harder to print, needs an enclosed printer and good ventilation, and can warp on large flat parts. Used for functional parts that see heat or wear.
TPU
A flexible, rubber-like material for gaskets, grips, bumpers and seals. It prints slowly, and very soft grades need a suitable printer.
Beyond these four
For higher strength or stiffness there are engineering-grade and carbon-fibre filled materials, which cost more. Tell us what the part has to do, such as load, heat, outdoor use or flexing, and we will recommend a material.
