3D Printer Safety Precautions Every User Should Know
3D printers are safe when used with care. These are the basics every user should know.
Heat
The nozzle and the bed get very hot. Do not touch them while the printer is on, and let everything cool before maintenance.
Fire
- Make sure thermal runaway protection is enabled in your printer's firmware.
- Keep flammable items away from the printer.
- Keep a working smoke detector and a suitable fire extinguisher nearby.
- Be careful with long prints you leave unattended, and check wiring and connectors for heat damage.
Ventilation and fumes
Some materials, such as ABS, release fumes when printed. Print in a ventilated space or an enclosure with filtration. Resin printing needs gloves, ventilation and careful handling and disposal of resin.
Electrical
Unplug the printer before working on its electronics, and never work on it with wet hands.
Moving parts, children and pets
Keep fingers and hair away from moving parts, and keep children and pets away from the printer.
This is general guidance. Always follow your printer manufacturer's instructions.
