PEI vs Glass Build Plate: Which Is Better?
The build plate affects adhesion, the finish of the bottom layer and how easily parts come off. Here is how the common options compare.
PEI plates
PEI-coated plates grip PLA and PETG well when clean, and a flexible steel plate lets you bend it to release the part. Smooth PEI gives a glossy bottom. Textured PEI gives a grainy matte bottom and hides small flaws. PETG can bond very strongly to smooth PEI, so a thin release layer such as a glue stick helps protect the surface.
Glass plates
Glass is very flat and gives a smooth bottom surface. Many materials need a thin layer of glue or adhesive spray to stick, and parts often release as the glass cools. It is heavier, so it can slow heating.
Smooth or textured
- Smooth: glossy bottom, good for flat precise parts.
- Textured: matte grainy bottom, hides imperfections and often grips well.
Which should you choose?
For general use with PLA and PETG, a textured or smooth PEI spring-steel plate is a practical choice. Glass suits flat parts where a smooth bottom matters. Follow your printer maker's advice for each material.
