PCB Design Requirements: What a Designer Needs

A clear brief saves time and avoids redesigns. Here is what to prepare before a PCB design starts.

The basics

  • A schematic, or a clear description of what the circuit must do
  • A list of components, or the key parts you want to use
  • Board size, shape and mounting hole positions
  • Connector positions and any parts that must sit in a fixed place
  • Supply voltage and current
  • Number of layers and board thickness, if you know them
  • The environment: heat, moisture, vibration
  • Any standards the product must meet
  • Quantity, and how the board will be made

What you can expect back

PCB designs are normally delivered as Gerber files, which any PCB manufacturer can use. Tell us what else you need.
