How to Level a 3D Printer Bed (Step by Step)
A level bed is the foundation of a good print. Most failed prints start with a poor first layer.
Why it matters
The nozzle must sit at the same small distance from the bed everywhere. Too far and the plastic will not stick. Too close and it squashes the filament and can block the nozzle.
Manual leveling
- Heat the bed and nozzle to printing temperatures, because the bed changes slightly when hot.
- Move the nozzle over each corner of the bed.
- Slide a sheet of paper under the nozzle and adjust the knob until you feel a light drag.
- Go around the corners again, then check the centre. Adjusting one corner affects the others.
Auto bed leveling
A probe measures the bed and the printer corrects for it. You still need to set the Z offset correctly, then check the result with a first-layer test.
Check with a first-layer test
Print a single-layer square across the bed. The lines should be slightly flattened and touch each other without gaps. Ridges and rough lines mean the nozzle is too close, and gaps mean it is too far.
Keep it level
Check again after moving the printer, changing the build plate or a crash.
