How to Clean a 3D Printer Build Plate
Oil from fingers and dust are the most common reasons prints stop sticking. Cleaning the plate fixes most adhesion problems.
Quick clean
Wipe the cool plate with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) on a lint-free cloth and let it dry. Do this before a print if you have touched the surface.
Deep clean
Wash the plate with warm water and a little dish soap, rinse well and dry it. This removes fingerprints and residue that alcohol alone may not. On textured plates, use a soft brush to clean the grain.
What to avoid
- Do not touch the print surface with bare fingers.
- Avoid abrasive pads on smooth plates.
- Avoid harsh solvents unless the plate maker says they are safe for the coating.
How often
Clean the plate whenever adhesion gets worse, and give it a quick wipe regularly if you print often.
This is general guidance. Always follow your printer manufacturer's instructions.
