FDM vs SLA 3D Printing: Differences and Uses
FDM and SLA are the two most common ways to 3D print plastic parts. They suit different jobs.
Detail and finish
SLA gives finer detail and smoother surfaces. FDM shows visible layer lines, which can be smoothed by finishing.
Strength and materials
FDM offers a wide range of tough materials such as PETG, ABS and flexible TPU. SLA resins are often more brittle, though tougher resins exist.
Size and cost
FDM suits larger parts and costs less for bigger objects. SLA suits small detailed parts.
Choose FDM when
You need a larger, functional or flexible part, or a lower cost.
Choose SLA when
You need fine detail, a smooth surface, or a small master pattern.
