Are Magnetic Build Plates Worth It?

A magnetic build plate is a flexible steel sheet that sits on a magnetic base. Many printers now use them. Are they worth the extra cost?

How they work

A magnetic sheet is fixed to the bed, and the flexible plate with its printing surface sits on top. After printing, you lift the plate off and flex it to release the part.

Benefits

  • Parts come off easily without scraping.
  • You can swap plates quickly and keep a spare one ready.
  • A damaged surface can be replaced without changing the whole bed.

Drawbacks

  • They cost more than a plain glass or sheet plate.
  • The extra thickness can change your Z offset, so you may need to adjust it.
  • Cheap plates may not sit flat, and the magnet and adhesive must be rated for your bed temperature.

Is it worth it?

If you print often and remove many parts, yes. If you rarely print, a simple plate may be enough. Check that the plate fits your printer and is rated for the temperatures you use.
